Photographer’s Block

I am in the middle of what can be compared to “writer’s block.”  A few people have been talking about my photos, and the question – “what are you going to take next?” – has popped up in those conversations.  I will admit, it is difficult for me to know.

I realize that photographers are a diverse group of people.  Some are great at creating photos while others are more spur of the moment, see it and take it.  I am the latter.  I have no difficulty seeing something and creating a way to photograph it.  I can almost say that most of my photos are just stumbled upon accidents.  Of course, this is not true because I am constantly looking for things to photograph.  If I am in a studio and have to create a photo, it feels unnatural.

Lately, I have been exploring a few different photographic subjects.  Some have been studio type portraits.  Others have been attempts to expand my capabilities.  It appears that this exploration has left me with “photographer’s block.”  The conversations have left me pondering – well, what is my next photo going to be?

How do I overcome this?  Other photographers recommend scheduling photo trips to take the photos that are enjoyable to take [“take what you want to take”].  Maybe it is time for one of these treks.  It is possibly time to stumble upon the next photo!

It has been awhile since I posted something.  It has been a crazy couple of months.  Between keeping busy with projects here and there and the flood and more projects popping up, I have been go, go, go.

In case the news has not spread, Colorado suffered severe flooding across a wide area.  Where I live experienced what the weather experts are calling a one in one thousand year event.  The amount of water that fell for the given period of time is only has a probability to happen once in every one thousand years, is another way to put it.

What does this mean for me?  Well, photography has been slow.  I have bee focused on numerous other projects that my camera has been sitting in the pack for more time than I would like.  There is also less accessibility to locations.  Another way to say that is – roads were washed out, trails were washed out, etc.

On a positive note, I ventured into professional portraiture, as I will call it.  I updated the church staff pictures with the help of my neighbor, who provided his lighting equipment.  It was a good learning experience, and I may continue to pursue opportunities to take more portrait photos in the future.

I am also going to be diving more into DSLR videos.  Once again, the church is going to be a platform for learning.  I will be responsible for recording the church cervices to post on the webpage.  That is part of the reason for the title of this post.  I just received a digital audio recorder to use for better audio recording quality and editing capability.  It is a Zoom H4n.

I look forward to learning more about DSLR videos as well as audio recording and editing.  I may post links later, but will have to see how things go.

Adam

One of the pleasures I find with photography is observing the world.  There is a certain sense of freedom to explore.

What in the world must Adam have felt like when he opened his eyes upon the creation?  The sky above and the land stretched out before him full of plants and animals.  Then God asks him to name every creature! It was all good, and God was pleased. It still is good.

There is a mentality today that says not to believe this story.  Maybe work will fill the time: a better job, a retirement plan, a nice house to live in, dedication to school and learning.  Find the answers in a book, or search online.  The TV may provide the latest weather update, because the blinds are shut and I cannot decide whether I should head out for a hike or not.  I am poking some sarcasm into this!

Photography allows me to feel as though I am Adam.  I can witness the light shining into the darkness, the land separated from water, and all of the plants and animals filling the earth.  I can call the hummingbird a hummingbird – man given the responsibility to name the creatures and also tend to the land and animals.

There is no perfect way to capture the scene!  There is a vastness that is beyond my comprehension, even the camera cannot see.  I find pleasure in knowing that God spent his time creating such a place!  My name is Justin, but I feel more like I am Adam – the first man created.

Refreshing

It was fun to get my camera out this afternoon.  Even though I have taken pictures of a badger before, these ones are by far my best ones yet.  My neighbor and I got closer than I have gone by myself.  We were still far enough away that a 400mm focal length was not enough!  I took two cameras out, one with film and the other one my DSLR.

Another reason why I felt somewhat okay getting closer to the badger was seeing how much confidence the deer fawn had.  It walked right up to the badger with out giving any thought to danger.  The encounter was more entertaining than tragic.  Having witnessed the deer fawn approach with confidence gave me more confidence.

Of course, I respect any wild animal’s space and realize that it is my responsibility to set limits and then not cross them.  Knowing limits comes from observing the animals and then responding accordingly.  It is never a good idea to cross the boundaries and end up with a conflict – injuries to persons or animals.

It is getting closer to migration time for the hummingbirds.  They are still active, but will probably start heading south in September.  I figured that since they were particularly active at our feeder tonight, I should try some photos of them.  I ended up getting a few decent shots.  Next time, I will change some of the auto-focus settings in an attempt to get even more photos.

Here are a couple of pictures to show old versus new!

On the top is a Honeywell-Pentax Spotmatic film SLR with a Vivitar 400mm f5.6.  On the bottom is a Canon EOS 5D mark III DSLR with an EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM and a TCIII 2x extender, which makes that equivalent to a maximum 400mm focal length f5.6.

Lens Adapter

My dad has quite a bit of film SLR equipment.  In fact, he loaned some of it to me when I took a photography class in college.  I got this idea in my mind when I started purchasing DSLR equipment.  My dad’s lenses are still useable.

I just did some quick searching to find lens adapters.  I found a few that should work to go from the old lens mount to my EF mount!!  I only ordered one to give it a try.  If it works, I will have an additional seven lenses to use for the price of the adapter!  I am looking forward to receiving the adapter in about a week and giving it a try.

I will add the additional lenses to my equipment list after I test the adapter to make sure it works properly.

I posted about WolfWood Refuge the other day.  I was able to see a presentation on wolves that they rescue.

I posted photos to my facebook page from the event.  I may add one or two onto this post later.

Wolves

I saw a post on Facebook a few days ago from the local paper about a program on rescued wolves and wolf/dogs.  This event is today and tomorrow, and I went this morning.

The wolf is my favorite animal and this was a neat experience because I was able to see five up close and personal!  The rescue organization that hosted the event attempts to socialize the wolves as much as they can, but they are still wild animals.  A few of the wolves were mellow enough for people to pet, and that was neat!

I took my camera along, but it was difficult to get a “good” shot because of the fencing and there were quite a few people.  The volunteers from the rescue did a great job handling the wolves as well as answering questions from the people.  I will sort through my pictures and post a few [more for documentation]!  Hopefully I will find an opportunity to photograph the wolf in the wild!  Anyone want to head to Yellowstone?!

Here is some information about the wolf rescue organization that hosted the event:

The site that hosts my online gallery has changed.  What does this mean?  Nothing much at the moment.  I have not currently jumped over to the new SmugMug.

However, I am probably going to explore the changes that SmugMug is providing.  Changes are coming.  They have new themes, layouts, organization, etc.!  This is just a heads up!

Deer Fawn and the Badger

A deer fawn wanted to get acquainted with a badger.

A deer fawn wanted to get acquainted with a badger.

During dinner last night, a badger scurried through the yard. I quickly grabbed my camera to attempt some photos, but the badger was moving through tall grass and I could barely see it. I thought it was going to continue running out of range. I was wrong.

The badger must have found a ground squirrel hunkered down in a hole in the next lot over. It started digging and digging, disappearing below the ground in a matter of minutes only to resurface a few times with a spray of fresh dirt being thrown behind it. The process continued for quite some time with the badger staying underground for several minutes at a time.

Meanwhile, a Red Tail Hawk was also looking for dinner and perched a few times in the trees. At one point, I was not sure whether to point the camera at the badger hole or the Red Tail Hawk! I was lucky to capture some of my best hawk pictures yet.

During another period of time when the first badger was underground, a second badger wandered by and sniffed around. It must have known not to tangle with the first badger and ran off before any confrontation.

The first badger stayed underground for quite some time while all of the other action was occurring. It reappeared just in time for a quick glance of some deer passing by. Then, it disappeared below ground again.

The deer went up the hill a little ways and I thought nothing much of it. I thought they would continue to stay up the hill. Nope! Next thing I knew, the deer were heading almost straight for the badger hole, with a fawn in trail!

It was a great opportunity to switch over to video to see what would happen. The deer walked right over the badger hole leaving the badger perplexed about who just walked over. The real confrontation began when the deer fawn noticed this unusual creature stirring by the dirt mound. Of course, it was curious and had to go check things out! Oh boy! I thought, this cannot be good for the deer fawn. It circled around the mound of dirt walking closer and closer. The badger squared up and followed the fawn with its eyes. The deer fawn inched closer, sniffing and eyeing the badger. There were occasional lunges by the badger toward the fawn, which would jump back quickly.

Eventually, all three deer were having a look at the badger which started acting rather frantic and defensive. It rolled in the dirt and lunged. The deer held their own and even had the badger running backwards!

What a treat to see! I was thankful to capture some good photos and I am currently in the process of figuring out how to edit the long video that I shot. The worst part about the video was that it was getting dark. The autofocus was not able to pick up enough contrast within the scene so I was manually zooming and focusing. This leaves me with some cutting and splicing before the final video is ready for viewing. Hopefully, once the video is up, it will be as entertaining as when I actually saw Bambi and the badger!
