Hello, 2013!

Yesterday [1-1-2013], I decided to head into Rocky Mountain National Park to take some pictures of the snow/clouds pouring over the Continental Divide.  It really was a pretty scene, and I’m surprised at how many out-of-state plates are in town again this winter!  It is almost like the tourist season never ends, now.  At any rate, it was nice to see so many people out enjoying the mountains!

So, I have to say, it was COLD!  The temperature when I left was in the mid 20s and I was prepared with a lot of layers and extra layers if needed.  However, even with all the layers, I still had to expose my fingers to the wind in order to operate the camera.  Boy oh boy!  The wind chill was something else.  Less than a minute with the mitten off and it started to get difficult to feel whether I was pushing the buttons or not.  I made a purchase of some fingerless gloves in December, and they helped.  I also, put a mitten over the top of the fingerless gloves while I was setting up and then only took off one mitten for the hand that I needed to use.  All of these tricks helped, but as soon as my fingers were exposed, it didn’t take long for them to become numb.

I made a few stops along the way.  My first stop was in Horseshoe Park to take a couple of pictures of the Mummy Range.  Although, the clouds were so thick pouring over them, that the only peak that was fully visible was Chapin.  Then, I stopped at Alluvial Fan and tried a couple of pictures there.  The sun was getting closer to setting, which meant I needed to head to my objective photo spot.

I went over passed Deer Ridge Junction and down to the over look above Beaver Meadows to capture some pictures there.  The sun was still quite a ways from setting, but with the clouds and snow blowing, some of the pictures turned out decent.  I stayed there for about half an hour plus, and was able to manage the wind chill fairly well.  I had to go back to the car to warm up my fingers and wait for a little better light, and I realized how numb my fingers were!  I got a couple of decent pictures after the sun went down, and then decided to move on to Moraine Park while the lighting was still getting better.  This was a good decision because it gave my fingers and opportunity to warm up.

While, I was on the way to Moraine Park, the lighting kept improving.  My objective was to go to the visitor center parking lot which was a good call, because there was only one other car there and they left when I pulled in!  At this point, I got out of the car for a few shots of Longs Peak and the Continental Divide.  My fingers quickly got cold again, so I went back to the car and turned the heat on high.  At which point, I figured I would roll down the window and spare my fingers more abuse!  This actually added the benefit of a somewhat more stable shooting position, and I was able to get some pretty nice HDR shots of the sunset colors and the mountains.

The sunset really didn’t pop as much as I thought it would, but the effect of the snow and the clouds rolling over the peaks was cool enough!  Check the store soon for the album.

Happy New Year!

Romans 12

I was trying to find a passage that would describe my outlook for 2013 and actually came across one that goes along with my 2012 highlights!

Romans 12

New International Version (NIV)

A Living Sacrifice

12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Humble Service in the Body of Christ

3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Love in Action

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[c] Do not be conceited.

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[d] says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”[e]

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

So, for 2013 I was searching for something along the lines of following the Lord’s will.  Guide me along the path that will lead me to You.

2012 Highlights

Being that today is the last day of 2012, it is fitting to reflect on some of the highlights from the year.  I came up with the theme of renewals and I would say I stuck to that pretty well!

Looking back, I notice a trend of pet sitting.  Almost every month has “check on pets” written somewhere.

The theme of renewals really started with the house, as I was able to work on some maintenance projects that came up in January and February.  Later in the year, I helped move furniture so that my mom could paint the rooms with a new color.

One of the main renewals that occurred in March was renewing my Certified Flight Instructor certificate.

I was also able to get out and hike quite a bit.  However, it was slightly more difficult because of road construction in the park.  This meant going to a few new locations.

In June, I was able to help with the church Vacation Bible School, which was a new experience.

August had the big event in that I gained a new brother-in-law.  This involved a trip to Arizona with stops at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park along the way.  I was able to see Third Day perform at Rockies Faith Day.  I also started working for my church as the webpage manager/technical guru.

I was able to accomplish one of my goals in aviation in September when I was invited to take a ride in a church member’s airplane.  He flew over my hometown, which fulfilled that goal.  It was also really neat because the aspen were changing color and I had never seen that from the air before.  I also went on some colorful fall hikes to see the aspens changing.

November was a fun month in that I began renewing a goal to start a small business.  My first attempt at being a small business owner/operator is with photography.  I’m guessing that is somewhat apparent if you are reading the blog!  It is amazing how one thing leads to another.  When I took the job as the church webpage manager, I did not really think I would be making the jump to starting a photography business.  Somehow, working on church projects motivated me to dive off into the deep end!

The first part of December involved taking a couple of small business workshops and research and development for what is now my photography business.  Although the process is still ongoing.  I am still the webpage manager/technical guru for the church and I still have pet sitting written on the calendar.  For Christmas, I was able to catch up with my best friend and his wife.  They are expecting their first little one in June 2013!

It has been fun starting the photography business because I have a database of digital photos starting in 2008 that I have been sorting through.  I am getting inspiration and a renewed sense of what has been going on in my life!

Now I am looking ahead to 2013!

I took this picture in 2011 while I was at San Tan Regional Park in Arizona with family and friends.  This is one of my favorite flower photos because the lighting makes the flower glow!

Sunset Brush Strokes

Sunset Brush Strokes

It never ceases to surprise me when I see a photo become popular with people!  The thing that is surprising is the photos that I think are going to be the popular ones usually aren’t the ones that become popular.  The saying that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” definitely lends some truth.

I recently uploaded two albums into my new online store at Just PhotographIN’.  One album is a sunset on 11-27-2012.  One of my favorite photos is of the delicately painted colors in the clouds that appear like brush strokes.

HDR Shots / Photo Organization

Posted by JUST PhotographIN' on December 17, 2012

This post applies for people attempting to shoot HDR shots.  I have been trying the feature out on my camera, and what I have noticed is that it can be a little overwhelming when I get back to the computer and I am sorting and editing the photos.

The explanation is simple.  I have the HDR setting on the camera to save all exposures [not all cameras have this option].  So, that means that I am getting four pictures for the price of one!  Well, when I get back to the computer, the label for the photos goes in order.  There is not a special tag on the HDR photos, it’s just the next label in line.  It is causing confusion on my part…  I have to look at the camera info for each picture to figure out which ones are HDR or try to remember which pics I took in the HDR shot.

The explanation is simple.  The solution is also simple.  However, there are a couple of ways to solve the issue.  Number one is this:  I usually take a few exposures of the scene without the HDR setting on.  Therefore, why do I need to save every exposure that makes up the HDR shot?  I can turn the save all exposures setting off and only save the HDR shot and that will decrease my work load when I am sorting them at home.

Option two is to rate or tag the HDR shot immediately after I take it so that when I get back, I can look at that info and know which one is the HDR shot out of all the other exposures.

Option three [and this applies to anyone that has the capability to shoot with exposure bracketing] is to rate or tag the photos that make up the HDR shot.

If the camera does not have a tag or rate feature, I would recommend a: smart phone, tablet, or even a pen and a piece of paper to take notes while you’re shooting.  It may seem time consuming at the time.  When you get back to the computer to do your sorting and editing you will probably appreciate the slight amount of extra time out in the field!

I guess that tip applies for any photo, not just HDR.  I was just thinking about panorama shots.  The same thing applies.

I just thought that I would pass my thought process on…  Might be helpful if you run into the same issue!
