Week Review

Posted by JUST PhotographIN' on January 26, 2013

This week has been busy.  The Tenth Avenue North song “Worn” has been going through my head most of today.  “I’m tired, I’m worn.”  But, it is all good.  I am enjoying what I am doing!

With that said, I did not have time to work on the weekly Project Life 365 recap collage.  So, hopefully tomorrow afternoon I will have some free time to edit that and post it.

I am looking forward to tomorrow’s theme – outside!  I think I will head into the park, again, to see what I can find in the great outdoors.  🙂  If I do not make it into the park, I may just take a stroll around part of Lake Estes.

A Thousand Words

They say “a picture is worth a thousand words,” yet there is still a story behind each picture.

How did the photographer get the shot?  Was it an epic adventure to a remote location where other people rarely visit, or as simple as getting up in the morning and looking out the window?  Was is spur of the moment – grab the camera and hope the picture turns out, or more of a studio shot with better controlled factors – lighting, models, objects, etc.?

Photography is more than just capturing moments!  It is about how the moment will be viewed and remembered.  I may have a completely different response to a picture simply because I know exactly what created the moment.

That is why a picture is worth a thousand words, yet we each have different responses and interest levels in specific pictures.  A viewer is connected to the picture simply by sight.  A photographer spent a moment [or more] of their lives with anticipation that the shot would turn out.  In some cases this means – blood, sweat, tears, adrenaline, fear, joy, gladness, sight, sound, taste, smell, etc. – are also attached to the photo for the persons involved with the moment captured [not literally – but in memory].

Project Life 365 1-18-2013 News

PL365NEWS

Today’s projectlife365 theme was news.  I can’t think of a better way to promote the Good News!  So, here it is:

Luke 2

New International Version (NIV)

The Birth of Jesus

2 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.

4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

Water Droplets on Aspen Leaves.

This photo was featured by the National Park Foundation!

I took this photo along the trail on the way back from Finch Lake in the Wild Basin area of Rocky Mountain National Park. It was a fickle weather day and the group that I was with actually got caught in a freak thunder snow event! Luckily, the weather cleared just as quickly as it came in and left the aspen leaves with water droplets as the sun re-appeared and I was able to capture this photo. One of the hiking members described the fall color as being “apricot” that year and location.

I uploaded this photo of aspen fall color to the National Park Foundation Facebook page. This aspen grove is near the Dunraven Trailhead which is accessed by a road in between Drake and Glen Haven, Colorado. I was with a group of family and relatives. After we ate lunch near this aspen grove, we went a short distance on the trail to Deserted Village.

Photo Categories/Titles/Keywords

I’m in the process of uploading pictures from 2010.  I never realized how important it is to come up with categories, titles and keywords.  However, I am finding it somewhat difficult to categorize, title and keyword some photos.

I am finding that photos fit into more than one category.  For example, a close up of an aspen leaf with fall color doesn’t really fall into landscape [for say], but it wouldn’t make sense to start breaking a gallery of photos into bits and pieces to make each photo fit into a category.  So, the photo of the aspen leaf ends up in a landscape gallery because the majority of the photos are landscapes.  Another example is a photo of an animal within a landscape scene.  I would have a hard time putting that photo into the category “Flora and Fauna” unless the animal is the main subject of the photo.  Therefore, a wildlife shot may end up in a landscape gallery – if you’re following my drift!

Sometimes I like to let the photo speak for itself, and this means leaving it without a title.  However, the importance of placing a caption along with the photo is an important part of making the photo more easily found.  Luckily, I can leave a photo without a caption and add keywords.  I found out the importance of titles and keywords the other day when I had my first photo view from a Google search.  My gallery had words within that search, and therefore was viewed!

So, even though it may be difficult and even somewhat confusing at times, the importance of adding categories, titles and keywords is an important step for getting photos out to the public.

Objective for 1-16 and 1-17

Back when I started the online gallery, I was going through photos from 2008 through 2012.  I guess I lost steam, motivation, or just got busy doing other things.  So, I looked at the calendar and tomorrow is blank.

I decided that I am going to make it my priority to go through 2010 photos and upload galleries.  If I get through 2010, I will move onto 2011 and so on.

I am going to have to dig around a little bit more for the 2008 and 2009 photos.  That is a project for a different time.

FYI – every gallery prior to November 2012 was taken on the Canon Powershot SD600.

This is going to be the last daily post for projectlife365… The rest will be on a weekly basis as a photo collage of the daily theme pictures. I will still post the theme photos in my online gallery on a daily basis under the “Photo Journal” category – http://justphotographin.smugmug.com
