This is a photo of a 6 x 6 Bull Elk near the west side of Alluvial Fan that I took on February first. Read my blog post, “Managing Light,” for more information about this trek into the park.
Beautiful elk. Photographically, the two trees on the border of photo (especially angled orientation) give relative size to the elk but make my eyes go crazy because they are being pulled to the sides of the frame very rapidly which prevents me from focusing on the elk. This was difficult lighting and HDR would be a challenge but we are losing detail in snow (which could have been muted with CS6 b/c draws eye away.) You have also lost detail in the black under the head. Is the focus on the eyes of the bull? I like the broadside view which gives more dimension to the elk but perhaps a head down more would have shown more of the antlers and size to head. The background is busy and should have been reduced in brightness and detail as it again draws the eye from the elk. Keeping taking pics and posting them. pat
